For our 1 year my husband and I stayed overnight at a nearby Bed and Breakfast. We went to dinner at a historical restaurant in that city, and to a comedy show. We bought each other cards. The following morning we went to a Renaissance Festival - it was just lovely and we had such a wonderful time, that we have made it a tradition to do every year!

PS I'd keep it simple for year 1 - maybe a card, a homecooked meal and a back massage. Just little stuff to show you care.

I’d recommend the hotel idea. Here, there are a ton of hotels down town and they usually have a romance package where they give you a luxury room and free breakfast, champagne etc it’s a nice way to get away from home and life for a night and sometimes you can get late check out
